Bhutan Visa

Effortless Visa, Meaningful Travel—Experience Bhutan the Right Way

Bhutan Visa

Applying for a visa (or permit) to Bhutan is very simple. All visitors must have a visa and permit before traveling to Bhutan (except for visitors from Bangladesh, Maldives, and India, who require a permit). Visitors can inform registered Bhutan tour operators like Exotic Vacations Bhutan   to apply online for a visa or permit. It takes around five days to process a visa.  To process a visa. Payments have to be wired to the concerned tour operator’s foreign currency account (will be provided by the tour operator).

All guests must pay Bhutan’s Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of USD 100 per person per night (concessionary rates apply for children) and a non-refundable, one-off visa application fee of USD 40.
Indian guests pay an SDF of Nu/INR 1,200 per person per night. The SDF funds important cultural, environmental, health, and educational projects across Bhutan. For more information you can visit website or email triptobhutan.travel@gmail.com.

Visa Issuance:

  • For air travelers: Your visa will be issued at the immigration desk at Paro Airport.
  • For travelers entering by road: The immigration office at the border town of Phuentsholing will stamp your visa in your passport. Note that entry from Gelephu or Samdrup Jongkhar is currently suspended.

The e-visa is approved and issued exclusively by the Department of Immigration in Thimphu, Bhutan. Your representative in Bhutan will handle the visa application process on your behalf. Once approved, the e-visa will be emailed to you. You must present this e-visa at the Drukair or Bhutan Airlines check-in counter when boarding your flight to Bhutan.

    • Travel insurance (not mandatory)
    • Passport-size photo or headshot
    • Residential address
    • Occupation

Visitors from India, Bangladesh and the Maldives

    • India: Visitors require a permit. You can apply for this before traveling or have Celestial Travels apply on your behalf. No fees are payable in advance. Permits can also be obtained at the point of entry, but be aware of potential long waits depending on the number of applicants. If applying for a permit on arrival, you will need a passport-size photograph and insurance for the duration of your visit, which can be arranged beforehand or purchased upon arrival. The SDF is payable when applying for your permit.
    • Bangladesh and the Maldives: Visitors require a visa, with the process similar to that for Indian nationals. You may apply and pay the relevant SDF online and prearrange your travel insurance before traveling, or you can do this in person upon arrival. We recommend arranging your permit or visa in advance.
