Thimphu, 06 December 2025): The Department of Tourism is pleased to share that Drukair, Royal Bhutan Airlines, has introduced a new international flight service connecting Gelephu, Bhutan, with Kolkata, India. The inaugural flight for the Gelephu–Kolkata–Gelephu sector will commence on 8th December 2025, marking a significant milestone in enhancing Bhutan’s regional connectivity and supporting the growth of Gelephu as an emerging gateway for tourism, trade, and cultural exchange.

The launch of this route provides improved access for travelers, creating additional entry points into Bhutan, and is expected to strengthen tourism flows to southern Bhutan, thereby benefiting local communities and businesses.

“The launch of the Gelephu–Kolkata-Gelephu route is a significant step forward in Bhutan’s vision for regional development and connectivity,” said Damcho Rinzin, Director of the Department of Tourism. “This new connection will not only make travel more convenient for guests but also provide meaningful opportunities for local communities in southern Bhutan. Gelephu is a gateway to many exciting destinations within Bhutan, and this connectivity will make travel easy and convenient. Gelephu is home to our Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), envisioned by His Majesty the King as a global hub for sustainable living, wellbeing, and innovation.
