Trip highlights:

The Chorten Kora Festival is a significant annual event held at the Chorten Kora stupa in Trashiyangtse, eastern Bhutan. The term “Kora” translates to “circumambulation,” reflecting the central practice of devotees walking around the stupa during the festival. The stupa itself was constructed in 1740 by Lama Ngawang Loday in memory of his uncle, Jungshu Pesan, and is believed to be a replica of Nepal’s Boudhanath stupa.

Traditionally, the festival comprises two main events:

  • Dakpa Kora: This event involves pilgrims, particularly from the Dakpa community of Arunachal Pradesh, India, who gather to circumambulate the stupa.
  • Drukpa Kora: This event is primarily attended by Bhutanese locals who participate in the circumambulation rituals.

Attending the Chorten Kora Festival provides an immersive experience into Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage and offers a glimpse into the spiritual practices that continue to thrive in the region.
